Orchid Love

Once upon a time, a man brought in an orchid plant to work and I was the lucky employee who got to take it home with me. It was already in bloom and stayed that way for quite some time until the flowers started to drop off. Being that I usually have quite the black thumb, I assumed I had killed it after a year went by and there were no new buds or growth. Most likely because I wasn't watering it as much as I should have and really only did it when I had a little bit of water left over in a water bottle. Anyway, I started watering it about once a week, making sure not to over water it and one day I noticed that this happened.

Okay, so I didn't take that picture right when I noticed it. After I started to see that it wasn't a fluke, I snapped it with my iPhone. And as the weeks passed, it continued to grow and grow and grow and the next thing I knew, there was a small bud!

I was so excited that there was the potential for a new flower! Especially once it started to get bigger and another new bud formed and I realized that maybe my thumb wasn't so black after all.

Except, the smaller bud eventually shriveled up and fell off. I can't say that it was completely my fault because I didn't change anything, but I'm thinking maybe the larger bud was stealing all of the resources and the little bud wasn't getting what it needed. But that's okay, because the first bud kept growing and before I knew it, it was about to bloom!

I could hardly contain my excitement. I was telling anyone and everyone that would listen that my orchid was alive and nearly blooming! I just knew it was going to open up in the next few days and so it began...

When I saw it really starting to open up, I knew by the end of the following day that it was going to be completely open....and it was!

You've never seen someone so excited to see a flower in bloom! I was so proud of myself for not killing the plant that I had to take a photograph every time something new was happening. Thankfully, it wasn't all in vain because I'm really proud of this minor accomplishment. My plants don't usually have this type of outcome and it's even more shocking because orchids can be so temperamental.

So now that I know that I do have the potential to keep plants alive with a little bit of love and care, I'm going to keep tending to my precious plant in hopes that it will continue to thrive and produce more lovely little fleurs.

Simple Pleasures

Sometimes I have a lot of things to be thankful for and sometimes I can only muster up enough genuine thankfulness for one thing. In this case, it's friendship. Which is really a lot of things because I've been in contact with so many friends this past week.

I've been up and down a lot lately and just when I think I'm doing well, something else happens that I let affect me negatively and it sends me plummeting back down. This past week, however, I've been doing extremely well and I've really been making the effort to get back into contact with friends. I have a tendency to become extremely reclusive at times, especially when I'm feeling sad, but right now, I feel like things are mostly on the upswing. It's nice to know that I have love and support from my friends, even if they are scattered throughout the states.

Every single night this week I have been making phone calls to my friends. Monday was Micaela, Tuesday was Dan, Wednesday was Alexis and Jenn, Thursday was Max (although he didn't answer and I missed his return call), and then Tyler actually called me last night. I plan on calling Max again tonight, but in the meantime, I'm reflecting on those conversations I've already had and I'm looking forward to making more calls this next week.

Thank goodness for good friends, because without them, life would be a lot more difficult.

I'm Awake.

Sometimes, I feel like this.

Don't know who to give credit to...a friend posted this on Facebook.

Especially as of late since every time I want to go to sleep at night I am overcome with anxiety and suddenly cannot sleep! So, at some point during the day, I feel like I'm reenacting those three seconds with that little kitty. Thank goodness for caffeine. Although, I should probably look into getting more sleep.

This Girl Is On Fire

I'm not a world class singer, but I do love to sing. Always have, always will. I sing in the usual places people sing...the shower, the car, the dressing room in a department store, the grocery store, walking from Point A to Point B. I'll even occasionally break out into song during a conversation if the timing is right, but usually I'm just singing to myself. This was the case on Sunday after watching Alicia Keys perform "Girl On Fire" as well as a couple of other songs at the NBA All-Star game. After the performance, I was walking to the trash to throw something away and I sang out a line from the chorus. The next thing I know, my mom says to my sister, "Oh, is [Alicia Keys] singing that song again?" And then I turned around, laughed, and hugged my mom for unknowingly giving me a huge compliment - because having my singing voice being mistaken for Alicia Keys' (even from just one line of a song) is a pretty awesome compliment...and I'll take it!

Simple Pleasures

Besides today being pay day, I've got one thing on my mind. VACATION. And not just any vacation...

A Tropical Vacation
Photo found here
My seester and I are *hopefully* planning a trip together for the month of October. I know that there are months and months standing between me and a sipping-drinks-on-the-beach, relaxing vacation, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it all works out and we can go together. I desperately a break from work. I can't remember the last time I had a proper vacation. And, at the rate I'm going, I'll be cashing out two weeks of vacation at the end of June since I don't have any upcoming plans. So whether it's sipping Mai Tais in Maui, sunbathing in the Bahamas, or livin' la vida loca in Mexico, I'll be looking forward to a tropical getaway and hopefully I won't have to go alone!

Valentine's Day Update

So for not having a Valentine today, I sure have felt special today!

My friend Lindsay came and dropped off a chocolate covered strawberry and a strawberry cupcake for each of us in the office. They were both delicious and amazing. The perfect way to start the day. I'll never complain about cake for breakfast!

Yes, I have a Looney Toons desk calendar. I love it. It makes me smile.

Another surprise for me? A dozen red roses. These were sent by a friend of mine who thought I'd need a smile today. They showed up on Valentine's Day...IN THE MORNING! I was impressed.

Not only are they beautiful, but they smell amazing. Ridiculously fragrant.

So while I thought the highlight of my day was going to be wearing my Valentine's Day necklace I got as a free gift from JewelMint, or my red bow tie belt, it turns out that there were other things in store for me. Sweets, flowers, and plenty of texts from my favorite friends.

Happy Valentine's Day.

Happy Valentine's Day

Happy Valentine's Day!

Or as some of my friends like to say...Happy Singles Awareness Day!

Last year I had a Valentine, this year, I don't. Those are the breaks sometimes. I don't think I've ever been out on a proper date on this particular day, but I'm not sure I'd really want to go out to dinner anyway. It sounds crowded. And overpriced. That doesn't mean I wouldn't be open to doing something else, like let you make me dinner, but let's face it, that isn't happening either.

I'm not bitter that I don't have a Valentine this year. I know I have people around me that love me and who I love just as much. Although when I go home tonight, this will probably look like my evening...

Thank you Google for providing me with some entertainment this morning!

This one might be my favorite though.....

Tesla

It's safe to say that I become easily obsessed with things from time to time. I occasionally go through phases of compulsively "needing" to do certain things. I've spent weeks scrapbooking during my free time, only to set it aside and not pick it back up. It's been nearly a year now and I'm not any closer to resuming. I read all of the Twilight books in FOUR days. I realize this isn't exactly something to be proud of, but it sure does drive my point home. My current obsession is knitting. I know, I'm an old lady, but these scarves I've been knitting are SO soft. Positively luxurious.

Speaking of luxury...my latest car obsession is Tesla.

Photo found here

It's actually been an obsession for a while since I first saw the Model S online, but even more so once I saw people actually driving them around. They sure are pretty. The lines, the emblem, the lights. I could go on. Not only is it an electric car, but it's got some get up and go, too. You can't really argue with an American-made, electric car that has zero emissions and can still make it 60mph in 4.2 seconds (on the Model S Performance). Unfortunately, since I live in a condo, I don't have any place to plug one in. Not that it matters much because I also can't afford one. Not even at the base price.

Photo found here

Those minor details won't stop me from admiring them from afar. Or possibly even closer. I've been looking into applying for a job at Tesla. I'm certainly not qualified to be one of their welders (even though that was my favorite section in art class), but I could certainly hack it as one of their office personnel. Ideally, I'd like something with hours that would allow me to still work at my current job because I need the money honey! Unless of course they want to pay me significantly more than I make at my current job, in which case, I'm sure you know what I'd be doing. After all, I do miss working in the automotive industry.

Cheese Straws

As you know, I was told to bring an appetizer to the Super Bowl. Appetizers are not my strongest area in the kitchen. Rather, dessert is. Instead of just doing what I wanted to do (make a dessert), I stuck with it and figured out an appetizer to bring...that morning. I had been racking my brain for over a week trying to figure out something fun to bring, but all I was coming up with were deviled eggs, a vegetable tray, or some kind of chips and dip. Boring!

I searched online for "quick and easy Super Bowl appetizers" and didn't find very much worth looking at. That's when I realized that I hadn't even cracked open any of the cook books I have in my cabinet. DUH. I have an entire book labeled "Appetizers" and it didn't even cross my mind to look at it until then. Unfortunately, that one was fairly useless because I didn't think the finger foodies in attendance were going to like the fishy flavors this book was touting (think salmon and caviar). So, I opened another book, which I think is from the 70s, and practically flipped straight to the recipe I was going to use. Cheese Straws. Quick AND easy.

Recipe from the Creative Cooking Course by The Creative Homemaker's Academy
I still had to make a quick trip to the store to get the cheese and cayenne pepper, but once I had them, it was pretty easy to make. I made a few alterations to the recipe like using extra sharp cheddar and I doubled the amount of cayenne pepper to 1/4 tsp., but other than that, I followed it straight up. Although, knowing what I know now, I might've chosen to use a cookie press instead of a pastry bag to give my hands a break from squeezing, or even just rolled the dough between my hands to make my own straws. Regardless of the method you use, they're going to turn out great. I made them small like the recipe called to, but you can make these as long or short as you like or even make them a little less straw-like and roll them into little bite-size balls (which will likely flatten a bit).

These little guys were a HUGE hit! I had so many requests for the recipe and one guy even thought they were store bought, which I took as the compliment he intended. I've also been told they taste a little like a Cheez-It. Can't beat that! Next time I make these it'll be alongside a big bowl of tomato soup. Enjoy!

Simple Pleasures

So far so good. Friday has started off quite well! I began my morning with a bagel from one of my favorite bagel shops and a cup of coffee from the Keurig in the office. I still sort of hate the Keurig machine, but sometimes you just have to roll with the punches. Anyway, here are some things that I am enjoying right now.

Pogo Mug
I don't know if you know this about me, but I love to play computer games. Nothing crazy, but I'm pretty fond of words games like Boggle, or card games like Canasta or the many versions of Solitarie, and oh so many more. When I first got a subscription to Pogo a few years back, it was through the McDonalds Monopoly game. My boss had won it, he didn't want it, so I took it! From that moment on, I was hooked. I am now a Club Pogo member and since I got my mom hooked on it too, I pay for her subscription as part of her Christmas present every year. I've always wanted a Pogo mug ever since I saw that my friend (who used to work for Pogo) had one. Little did I know, Pogo brought back their Pogo merchandise store and my mom bought me a mug! Not only that, but she added my user name to it too! You can't see it in the photo, but it's super cute. I was so excited to use it, that I made a cup of tea last night just so I could. You wouldn't think someone would be so excited about a mug, but I was...it happened.

Cute Tin of Mints
My sister picked up this tin of mints for me when she went to Sacramento with a friend. I'm a sucker for a cute container, but what was even better was the mirror that inside! Now I can freshen my breath and check to make sure I don't have a giant piece of spinach stuck between my teeth after lunch.

 Estée Lauder Bag
If there's one thing I can say my Nana and I have in common (among many other things of course), it is our mutual love for cosmetics. And not just any cosmetics. Quality cosmetics. I have long since put my days of Maybelline eyeshadow and CoverGirl blush behind me. I do still purchase CoverGirl LashBlast on occasion when my Diorshow Blackout runs dry and I did try CoverGirl Nature Luxe foundation a few years back, which was awful, so I try to purchase items that are a little finer. One of my favorite things is Estée Lauder's black eyeliner pencil in Softsmudge Black. I've been using it since Jr. High and to be honest, every other black eyeliner I've ever tried since then has always fallen short. So Estée Lauder is my go-to, but I've expanded on the black and often wear the gray Slate Writer color as well. The last time I went to my Nana's she gave me one of her new gifts with purchase (she had two), which was the purple snakeskin bag in the photo. I love it and I'm already using it to house my other EL items like the eyeshadow and blush palettes that I've been using non stop and a new blue eyeliner pencil that I'll be testing out this weekend!

Reverse Effect

Last July I wrote about how my hair was doing the trendy ombre thing. Since I've promised my seester that I wouldn't outrightly blog about why she thinks the ombre trend has been so popular, I'll just say that I think so many people are doing it because their hair is ridiculously over-processed and they're wanting to give their tresses a break. They may also just want to mostly grow it out so they can start fresh. For me personally, I want to see what my natural hair color looks like again before I start getting those pesky grays popping up all over. So far, so good. Not a gray in sight (knock on wood) and I'm seeing my natural highlights again. Trust me, they are blonde, not gray.

A more dramatic reverse ombre than I will be experiencing : Photo found here
If I hadn't ventured back to the dark side in early August, I would've had way more outgrowth than I do now, but I also would've HATED the color at the ends and while it was growing out. Luckily, the black has faded to a rich, dark brown and looks slightly more natural than it did the first few months after I had it done. Not to mention that I seem to have a few more lighter colors peeking through from all of those bleach washes. So for now, I'll be embracing a reverse ombre look with my hair since the color coming in is lighter than my ends rather than the ombre that's been trending with darker roots and lighter tips. Now I just need to practice some patience while I wait for my hair to grow and grow and grow. Easier said than done.

The HarBowl

How did you prepare for the big game?

I was decked out in my 49ers gear. I opted not to don my gold Converse sneakers and stuck with my black Nikes instead. Besides, they went with the another Nike item I was wearing...

Nike #7 Colin Kaepernick Jersey

Let's face it, if I had bought a white jersey, I probably would've emerged from the Super Bowl party with something on it that would NEVER come out. Mustard. Ketchup. Red wine. Baby vomit (the hosts have a new tiny tot!). Even though I would look super awesome in a white jersey if I had an amazing tan, I'm not likely to be wearing this during the summer season when they aren't playing football, so I wisely chose red. Regardless of the fact that I'm practically porcelain at this point, I was looking sharp in my new jersey.

49ers Scarf

I was supposed to go to one of the games with a friend of mine, but I wasn't feeling well that day, so I passed. Even though I missed out, he still made sure to bring me the scarf they were handing out at the game. I didn't even go and I still got a souvenir! Since I'm pretty much always cold, I brought it with me to the party to keep me warm, but it was such a beautiful day, that I didn't really need it. I did get some wear out of it when I went to the grocery store in the morning to get supplies for my appetizer though!

Festive Niners Nails

I bought these from Sephora a while back and have been waiting for the perfect time to use them. Super Bowl Sunday was the perfect day! I suppose Valentine's Day would have been appropriate too, but since I don't have a man this time of year, I wore the red bubbles in honor of the 49ers instead. They weren't exactly what I was hoping for in a nail product because they were more of a sticker and less of an actual polish. I was expecting something of the Sally Hansen variety, but these fell a little short. I peeled them off as soon as I got home, but somehow they managed to make it through the entire game and while I played with the kids.

Overall, I was disappointed that the 49ers lost, but it was still fun to watch the game with good friends, critique the commercials, and sing along with Beyonce and the very brief Destiny's Child reunion.

Simple Pleasures

I don't know about you guys, but I'm looking forward to the weekend. Especially because Super Bowl Sunday is in two days! I'll be attending a Super Bowl party that I've been going to for the past few years now and this time I'm supposed to bring an appetizer. I haven't quite made up my mind on what I'm bringing yet, but I'll figure it out. I might just bypass the app, and bring a dessert. It's so much easier for me to decide what to bring when it's a dessert.

Anyway, here are some food items that I've either been enjoying or have been wanting to make.

Green Kit Kat

If you know me, you know that Kit Kats are one of my favorite candy bars. More specifically, the Big Kat. This time, however, I broadened my horizons and partook in a Kit Kat from Japan. The Sakura Matcha Kit Kat was slightly intimidating at first (it was green afterall), but once after I took one bite, I was in heaven.

Caprese Pops
Photo found here
There's just something so delicious about a Caprese salad that these appetizers are perfect as a bite-sized alternative. Besides, the cherry tomatoes are screaming, "GO 49ers!"

Zucchini Chips
Photo found here
I like potato chips just as much as the next person, but I really like this substitution with zucchini. It's the perfect little guilt-free treat because these ones are baked, not fried! I could definitely nosh on these while watching Colin Kaepernick throw around the football during the big game!
