The Mp3 Experiment

Have you ever heard of Improv Everywhere? They cause scenes. Literally. You should really check out some of the stuff they've done on their website So what exactly is Improv Everywhere? The official "About Us" is as follows:

Improv Everywhere is a New York City-based prank collective that causes scenes of chaos and joy in public places. Created in August of 2001 by Charlie Todd, Improv Everywhere has executed over 100 missions involving tens of thousands of undercover agents.

I've seen a few of their scenes online like the No Pants Subway Ride and several others. One of my best friends posted a link on Facebook to The Mp3 Experiment Seven from October 2010. I hadn't seen this one and I thought it was pretty amazing, so I had to share.

Over 3,000 people in New York City downloaded an original Mp3 file comprised of music and instructions from a mysterious, goofy voice. People assembled in various stores in Times Square and at exactly 6 p.m., everyone pressed "Play." What happened next was incredible.

Check it out...

One of my favorite parts is when everyone freezes on the sidewalk. How crazy for everyone not participating to see all of those people simultaneously stop dead in their tracks. I bet it threw more than a few people off when thousands of people suddenly became as still as mannequins.

I'm sure tons of planning and coordinating goes into every scene of organized chaos, but it is well worth it when you see the end product. I think it would be so cool to be a experience something like that and be in on the secret. It looks like so much fun!

If you are in New York City, or even in the surrounding area, I think you should participate! Their next big scene is The Mp3 Experiment Eight and it takes place this upcoming Saturday, July 16th at 8:30 p.m. in Lower Manhattan. If you go, take pictures! You can even RSVP to the event on Facebook here.

If you aren't in NYC, Improv Everywhere does tour periodically and they are apparently making a stop here in the Bay Area! San Francisco to be exact! I'll be keeping my fingers crossed that I'll be able to go and that it won't coincide with my friend's upcoming nuptials. An official date has not been posted yet, but when it does, I'll be sure to mark it down on my calendar! Who's coming with me???
