Oh Sugar, Sugar

I love sugar. A lot. Cookies, candy, chocolate, cake, brownies, pies, brown sugar by the spoonful, sugar cubes. You name it, I like it. Or I probably like some version of it.

When it comes down to it, I realize that sugar has an addictive effect. If I suddenly get the silly notion to deprive myself of sweets, I get headaches and become irritable. Withdrawal symptoms? Perhaps, but those do not generally occur for that reason very often since I literally consume sugar on a daily basis.

This morning, I came across an article in the NY Times. Is Sugar Toxic? I realize that sugar should be eaten in limited quantities (like that faulty food pyramid shows), but to suggest that sugar is toxic was something that immediately piqued my curiosity.

The statements made within the article classify what sugar is as well as take a cold, hard look at the potential effects sugar has on the body. Sugar: The Bitter Truth by Robert Lustig is the video on YouTube behind the whole thing. I have yet to watch it because it's nearly 1 1/2 hours long and I simply did not have that kind of time this morning before work, but it is on my list of things to do today. I did, however, read the article in it's entirety and found it to be quite informative. I am rather looking forward to seeing what the video has to offer.

Really though, is it any surprise that sugar is the enemy? This is a concept that is far from "new" at least for me. Having read books like Skinny Bitch where there is a chapter called "Sugar IS the Devil" and The Kind Diet which also touts "More Nasty Stuff: White Sugar and Processed Foods" I know how terrible sugar is! I know! I know! I know! Yet I still refuse to wean myself off of it. I am attached to it! That awful, sweet, goodness. So good, but so bad.

If I completely nixed processed sugars from my daily diet, I am almost certain I would lose 5-10 pounds without even trying. Not that I need to lose any weight, just that this gives you a fairly accurate idea as to how much sugar I ingest on a daily basis. Translation? I eat A LOT of sugar. I am going to attempt to reduce my sugar intake. If I were Catholic, I suppose I could have given it up for Lent, but since I am not, I will just have to try to eradicate this sugar addiction for my own personal reasons. Skinny Bitch, The Kind Diet, the article I just read, and the video I'll be watching shortly should help build a good argument to justify to my tummy why I am ousting sugary treats from my day-to-day life.
