Feel the Burn

Last December I bought myself a gym a membership before the mass of New Year's resolutioners flooded the place and took up all of my treadmills. My goal? The same as everyone else's. GET INTO SHAPE! I wanted to tone up, build up my endurance, and prepare for the rapidly approaching bikini season.

At the time I wasn't in bad shape per se, but I knew I could be in better shape. So I decided to take a tour of the gym nearest my home and I signed up the following day. Even though the monthly price was twice that of another gym a few miles away, I knew I would be less apt to go if I had to drive across town. So I swapped price for convenience because two minutes from door to door isn't so bad! At first I was going regularly, but then my gym excursions became less frequent and my desire for a bitchin' bikini bod started to dwindle, or at least it was pushed to the nether regions of my brain.

When an entire month had passed me by without a single trip to my sacred gym, I realized I needed someone to kick my butt back into shape. Since I simply cannot afford a personal trainer, I began relying on my mom. When I signed up for my membership, I received a free six-month pass to give to a friend or family member. I knew my mom wanted to lose a few pounds, so I gave it to her. She's been going regularly, which means she's keeping me accountable in going regularly, too.

My gym routine has consisted mainly of walking/jogging on the treadmill, but I know I need to step up my game if I really want to see more results by summer. I turned to an athlete friend of mine, Dan, who created a 4-week workout regime for me to do. I have yet to start (partly because I'm dreading the sore muscles I'll be feeling), but it is glaring at me on a day to day basis. I have added some variety to my workout by switching between the treadmill, the elliptical, and bicycle machines, but I need to do more. For now, I'm just trying to build up my stamina and get a good momentum going before I delve into the wide world of weights.

I have been avoiding the rowing machine like the plague, but I know it is on the workout list Dan gave me, so I need to jump on it and give it whirl. Maybe today? That's what I said yesterday. I might be a little intimidated.

With warm weather and sunshine just around the corner, I'm hoping all of this exercise will pay off! Next exercise adventure? YOGA!
